EASTOVER, S.C. — One person is dead following a car accident in Lower Richland County early Thursday morning.

Richland county coroner Gary Watts has identifed the person who died as Leroy James Abrams, 31 of Sumter.   He was the driver of the car and was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.   An autopsy indicated the cause of death to be 'Blunt Force Trauma to the Torso' due to the motor vehicle collision.

The collision took place around 6 a.m. on Highway 601 near Governor Heyward Road, which is two miles north of the town of Eastover.

State troopers say the car was driving down the road when the vehicle ran off the right side of the highway, over-corrected, then ran off the right side. The vehicle then went down an embankment where it struck several trees and finally overturned.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation.
