The Augusta Mayor says the arena could be torn down to make way for a new venue.

(Augusta, Ga.) - The James Brown Arena could be targeted for demolition. Augusta Mayor Deke Copenhaver says the arena could be torn down to make way for a new venue. He says the new arena should also bear Brown's name. J.R. Riles, who came up with the idea of naming the arena after Brown, says the building should stay, especially since it was the site of Brown's final memorial service December 30th.Riles says the coliseum needs to be renovated to honor Brown and to suit concerts better.Copenhaver says he's not sure the renovations are possible. The arena was built in 1979 and city leaders balked at several renovation proposals before the arena was named for Brown in August.
