Columbia, SC (WLTX) - Two groups in Columbia held an event Sunday afternoon to help out new and expecting mothers.
Wine and Design is typically a spot for paint parties, where friends can come to paint and enjoy some wine.
On Sunday, the business transformed to a baby shower for moms in need.
Shop owner Ashlye Wilkerson said they keep it fun, but helpful.
“They're going to be able to paint something unique for their child's nursery, but they'll also leave with a gift bag that has brand new items, terry cloth towels, a crib set, diapers, wipes, and other courtesy gifts in their bags,” Wilkerson explained.
Wilkerson founded the Magic of Learning Foundation, which partnered with Power in Changing Diaper Bank to start the community baby shower program three years ago, after the South Carolina floods.
Now, they're giving donated baby supplies to moms like Kerrin Butler, who thought she was done having kids.
“So this was a very difficult adjustment to swallow with all my other kids to school and to college and graduating and out of schools. New baby? So, that's how I learned about it, like how am I going to be prepared?” said Butler, with 3-month-old Ka’mya bouncing on her lap.
Butler said events like this have been a great way to meet other sometimes struggling moms and now they often keep in touch with each other.
Butler told WLTX the two groups have been helpful in more ways than one.
“Even if I had diapers that were too small, they switched them out for a bigger size cause she was a little bit bigger than we expected,” Butler said laughing.
Butler and 26 other moms received help they needed Sunday and created some new artwork to take home to their babies.
All the items given to the moms were donated within the last year or were purchased with donated funds.
