No charges for SC woman who shot, killed escaped inmate

The inmate escaped from a prison and broke down the door to her home. The legal gun owner then shot him.

PICKENS COUNTY, S.C. —  A woman who shot and killed an escaped inmate earlier this month as he tried to enter her Pickens County home will not face charges.

Assistant Solicitor J. Baker Cleveland III said the homeowner should not face charges relating to the shooting death of Bruce McLaughlin, 30. The Pickens County Sheriff's Office will not pursue criminal charges, according to a press release.

McLaughlin escaped Pickens County Prison along with Timothy Dill in a premeditated plan they had formed. Two detention officers were assaulted during the escape and Dill was arrested within 30 minutes.

McLaughlin was shot by a homeowner less than a half-mile from the prison on Meece Mill Road after he broke into her home through a back door. He was pronounced dead at Greenville Memorial Hospital later that morning.

McLaughlin was in jail on charges of first-degree burglary and grand larceny.
