SC Senate president: No special session for education reform

South Carolina Senate President Harvey Peeler doesn't plan to call the Senate in for a special session to deal with education reform.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina Senate President Harvey Peeler doesn't plan to call the Senate in for a special session to deal with education reform.

Gov. Henry McMaster on Wednesday again called for the Senate to return and debate a massive education overhaul bill passed by the House in March. He says the problems in education are too serious to wait.

Peeler said Thursday he expects the Senate Education Committee to continue its careful review. Before the regular session ended on May 9, the committee had cut the bill down by about a third.

Peeler said in a statement the committee is listening to parents, teachers and students, and he expects the bill to be ready for debate by the full Senate when lawmakers return in January for the 2020 session.
