Columbia, SC (WLTX) Have you received a pre-recorded phone call that threatens to suspend your Social Security benefits if you don't call a certain number?

It's a scam.

Newberry County sheriff Lee Foster says that People are receiving pre-recorded robocalls using the name of the Social Security Administrator Nancy Berryhill. The robocall threatens suspension of benefits if the recipient does not call a number.

The real purpose of the call is to obtain money via various forms of gift cards and get additional personal information.

The Social Security Administration would not request funds from a client through any form of gift card or pre-paid Visa. Unless it is an unusual situation, Social Security will not call and ask for personal information.

The sheriff says do not return these calls.

If by chance one would talk to a live person on the initial call, simply hang up. If you don't talk to them, they can't get your hard earned money or your vital information.
