Kershaw County students glamming up for the first day of school

Students were given free haircuts, manicures, and school supplies.

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — Kershaw County students, volunteers, and the community came together Tuesday for an event that provided free makeovers to boost students' confidence before heading back to school.

"This is just a great day in Kershaw County to be a kid," says Brian Mayes, director of the Jackson Teen Center.

"It shows the spirit of the community and people willing to give back to the community, so this is awesome, it's just awesome," says Doloris Grant, who attended the Groom and Grind event with GG Jackson with her grandkids.

“It means a lot, it means people are generous and kind, and in today’s society you don’t find too many kind people or generous people this is a worthy cause, our children are our future,” Grant said.

The event was designed to help students start the school year on a positive note.

"It feels good to look good. If you look good, you do your best and everything like that and it's like you not looking how you want to look, you won't give 100%," said senior Donnjah Strabford.

In addition to Camden students, the Jackson Teen Center partnered with the school district to ensure that kids from rural areas also had access to the free services.

"We want every child in Kershaw County looking beautiful for their first day of school," Mayes said.

Students return to the classroom in Kershaw County on Tuesday, August 1st.
