Fire contained after blaze erupts at Orangeburg County metal recycling facility

Crews responded to the grounds around 5:25 p.m. and worked to put out the fire for hours, which was sending dark smoke high over the area.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say a fire at a metal recycling facility in Orangeburg County is under control after sparking mid-afternoon on Sunday.

Witness reports and video on Sunday afternoon showed a large plume of dark smoke rising over the area of DCC Recycling and White Sands Road. Videos also showed several emergency vehicles responding to the property.

Fire officials said crews were dispatched to the scene around 5:25 p.m. and confirmed the fire was under control around 9:30 p.m. after hours of work by several firefighters. At the time, crews were still finishing some of their operations there.

As of Sunday night, officials didn't have details on a possible cause or the extent of the damage at the facility.
