Third suspect arrested in 2017 death of 81-year-old Air Force veteran

Hamilton, an Air Force veteran, later died from a head injury sustained during the incident.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - A robbery that ended with the death of an 81-year-old store clerk has now resulted in arrests for three suspects.

Ervan Matthew Harvey, 49, was arrested Wednesday and charged with murder and strong arm robbery. Jeffrey Alan Simmons and Jason Randolph were previously arrested in connection to the incident.

On August 22, 2017, the suspects allegedly stole a TV from the Sears at Columbia Place Mall. A store clerk, 81-year-old Charles Duaine Hamilton, attempted to chase the suspects, but was pushed the ground.

Hamilton, an Air Force veteran, later died from a head injury sustained during the incident.

During a 2017 press conference, Sheriff Leon Lott said Hamilton was retired, but went on to work at the Sears store in the loss prevention department. He was a regular churchgoer, and a good member of the community, the sheriff added.

Harvey was booked at the Richland County Detention Center.
