Brad Brownell Receives Contract Extension and Raise

Clemson's first trip to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament has resulted in a long-term deal for head coach Brad Brownell.

A Clemson University Board of Trustees committee gave initial approval to contractual changes for Clemson's head basketball coach and football defensive coordinator Thursday.

The Compensation Committee approved a contract extension for Clemson men's basketball coach Brad Brownell, punctuating one of the program's best seasons — and off-seasons — to date. The eighth-year head coach's new deal keeps him in Upstate South Carolina until April 2024 and is worth up to $15 million.

The full board is scheduled to give a final vote on the contract changes on Friday.

After going 22-12 in his first season with the Tigers in 2010, Brownell's teams went 102-91 over the next six seasons with no NCAA Tournament appearances. Clemson extended his contract through the 2020-21 season last April, a deal which was worth an average of $1.9 million per year.

Although he began the year on a perceived "hot seat" in the eyes of some fans, Brownell's Tigers greatly outperformed their expectations, finishing with a 25-10 record and a Sweet Sixteen appearance under their belts.

"We have a tremendous amount of momentum and excitement in our basketball program, and that is a testament to Brad's leadership," said Clemson Athletic Director Dan Radakovich. "This new agreement demonstrates to Brad our continued strong commitment and support to him, his assistant coaches and to our basketball program."
