Tennis on the rise in Lexington County

The Lexington area tennis association sent over 100 players to this year's Junior Tennis State championships.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — One sport in Lexington County has seen an increased interest over the past year.

April Gift is the Junior Coordinator with the Lexington Area Tennis Association (LATA) and since taking over, she has seen an increased interest in tennis in the county.

“I started here in late September and their program didn’t have a lot of kids playing but what I’ve done is have a lot of team challenges which is a great way for kids to get interested in tennis." Gift said

Two weeks ago, the association sent over 100 kids to the South Carolina Junior Tennis state championships and they ended up coming back with some hardware.

“We now have two teams that are going to sectionals so they’ll be representing South Carolina in Rome, Georgia August 9th-11th," Gift said.

And Gift and the rest of the association wants the community to understand the impact Tennis can have on kids.

"We are a sport of a lifetime and it teaches you a lot of life lessons that you need in life," Gift says. "It's about putting smiles on people’s faces, getting them experience building their confidence in the game, regardless of what sport they’re playing."
