New Heathwood Hall Football Coach Arrives

Danny Lewis met his new players for the first time Friday morning.

Danny Lewis is no stranger to Heathwood Hall.

From 1996-1998, he was on John Daye's staff before joining the college ranks. For the past 10 seasons, he's coached a number of positions on the offensive side for S.C. State and that was followed by stops at The Citadel and Middle Tennessee.

Former Citadel head coach Ellis Johnson, who is currently working at USC as an analyst for Will Muschamp, former Clemson/USC assistant and current Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill and current S.C. State head football coach Buddy Pough are the last three head coaches Lewis has worked for and their philosophies are ingrained in him.

"I think you take a little bit of where you've been," Lewis said prior to meeting with his team.

"My last couple of jobs, Coach Ellis Johnson was the fundamentals, technique guy. Rick Stockstill was the players coach and Coach Pough was the push them to be successful guy. I think all those traits will carry over to Heathwood football."

A former player at Charleston Southern, Lewis also had a stop at Newberry College and was a graduate assistant at USC under Lou Holtz.

He takes over for Marcus Lattimore who left after one season to join Will Muschamp's staff as Director of Player Development. The Highlanders went 1-9 in 2017.
