SAN ANTONIO — Fans of the beloved Scott Westerfeld series "Uglies" will soon see the characters on Netflix, nearly 20 years after the first book's debut.
The "Uglies" series entered the forefront of the YA dystopian genre in February of 2005. The story spanned four books and a spinoff series starting with "Imposters."
The first book takes place in a world where cosmetic surgery is mandatory at just 16 years old. The story follows Tally, who is initially ecstatic to finally become "pretty" in societal terms.
Once pretty, Tally will enter a high-tech paradise where her only job is to have fun. But everything changes when her new friend Shay decides she doesn't want to be pretty. The 425-page journey reveals the truth behind the pretty word. Soon the authorities catch up and Tally is forced to choose between betraying her friend or never turning pretty at all.
The film is set to premiere on Netflix on Sept. 13. The film's lead is Joey King and includes several other Netflix stars like Chase Stokes from "Outer Banks," Laverne Cox from "Orange Is the New Black" and "Tall Girl's" Luke Eisner.
The trailer for the movie received over 1.3 million views on YouTube and thousands of positive interactions.
According to the author's website, his books have received countless accolades including the Philip K Dick Special Citation, the Aurealis Award, the Victorian Premier’s Award, and have been named NY Times Notable Books and BBYA Top Ten Children’s Books of the Year.
Westerfeld was born in Dallas and grew up around all three coasts of the United States. Him and his wife spend there time between New York City and Australia, according to the author's website.
