Art, drinks, and one epic bicycle ride: Things to Do in the Midlands

Art museums and charity events make up the to-do list for July 10-14

COLUMBIA, S.C. — While it might seem like the Things To Do list has gotten a tad bit shorter this week (let's chalk that up to a post-July 4 recovery period), it doesn't mean there aren't epic things to do on the calendar.

Take in a new, epic art show in Orangeburg, mix an epic afternoon spritz, or -- if you are so physically inclined -- take an epic bicycle trip from the Upstate to the Coast for a good cause. Check it out...

WEDNESDAY, July 10

Nature in Oil and Paper: Dianne MunKittrick, Orangeburg County Fine Arts Center, 649 Riverside Dr., Orangeburg. New works by Santee wildlife artist Dianne MunKittrick on display through Sept. 25. Opening reception 6-9 p.m. Wednesday. Regular hours: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday.

Forest Acres Farmers Market, 2-6 p.m., Gills Creek Memorial Park, 24 Forest Lake Place. Check out local produce, arts and crafts, and food trucks at the City of Forest Acres' new neighborhood park.

THURSDAY, July 11

Spritz Mix Happy Hour, 4-7 p.m. Columbia Museum of Art, 1515 Main St. Build-your-own-spritz bar is the perfect way to chill out after a hot summer’s day. Admission is free; cash bar features beer, wine and spritzes. 

FRIDAY through SUNDAY, July 12-14

Ride to End ALZ Register for the in-person or virtual rides to raise money to support research for a cure for Alzheimer's disease. The in-person ride has three points of entry – day 1 departs from Heritage Park in Simpsonville, day 2 from Newberry College, and day 3 from Orangeburg -- for the 255-mile cycling trip to Charleston Harbor. The virtual challenge can be completed indoors on a Peloton, or outdoors in your neighborhood throughout the month. Details about both experiences can be found online at ALZ.org 

FRIDAY, July 12

Gentle Morning Yoga on Boyd Plaza, 7-8 a.m. Boyd Plaza, 1515 Main St. Mats and chairs provided for this gentle yoga class, a perfect way to jumpstart your morning. Ages 13 and up, no unaccompanied minors. 

SATURDAY, July 13

Accessibility Morning with Esteban the Magnificent, 9-11 a.m., South Carolina State Museum, 301 Gervais St. Free access for families who would benefit from a quieter, sensory-friendly and disability-adapted experience at the museum. American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter available, select sensory show in the planetarium. Free, but registration encouraged. 

Kershaw County Farmers Market, 9 a.m.-noon, 906 Broad St., Camden. Fresh-from-the-farm produce, arts and crafts, and more

Soda City Market, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Main Street Columbia. Check out the makers and food vendors along three blocks of Main Street

The Market at Icehouse, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Icehouse Amphitheatre Pavilion, 107 West Main St., Lexington. Local farmers' produce and local artisan market.

SUNDAY, July 14 (Bastille Day in France)

Tournée Française: Bastille Day at CMA, 2-2:45 p.m., Columbia Museum of Art, 1515 Main St. Take a French language tour of the French works of art in the CMA collection, led by art historian Dr. Frank Martin. 

Purple Martin Cruise, 7-9:30 p.m., Spirit of Lake Murray, 216 Shadowood Dr., Irmo. Take a 2.5 hour cruise around Bomb Island at Lake Murray to watch thousands of birds return to the island to roost for the night. Food and drink available for purchase on the boat. Adults $59; children 10 & under, $50

Free Literary & Expressive Arts Camp for Youth, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Historic Harriet Barber House, 116 Barberville Loop, Hopkins. SC Humanities and South East Rural and Community Outreach (SERCO) sponsor a series of free workshops for ages 6-15 to explore and foster diverse forms of artistic expression.
