From art to horses: Midlands summer camps offer something for every child

With the school year wrapping up, parents are on the hunt for the perfect summer camp for their kids. Here are a few options.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — With the school year wrapping up, parents across the Midlands are looking for the perfect summer camp for their children.

"They are engaged, they are being challenged, and they are also having fun," said Bri Tribbett, Education Initiatives Manager at the EdVenture Museum.

Tribbett highlighted the museum's wide range of summer camps, ensuring something for everyone.

"3D printing, cooking, animals, ecosystems, science-based, I mean we have everything," Tribbett said.

For instance, art camps at the museum offer a mix of creativity and learning about colors.

But EdVenture isn't the only provider of diverse camps in the Midlands.

"There are over 100 camps, and we have around 2,000 registrations. Typically, we have about 2,400," said Kevin White, Director of Summer Programs at the Hammond School.

According to White, Hammond offers unique opportunities from horse camp to Minecraft camp. "This year, for one of our new camps, we partnered with Hickory Top Farm in Eastover, and the offering is called the Offering of Horses," White said. "It's supposed to be building relationships with horses and humans."

Both programs allow children to continue learning and get extra study time in their favorite subjects.

"They learn a little bit, they do some activities, and then they have some exploration time where they can go through the exhibits and explore and play. Then they come back here for about three sessions. It's a lot of playing, lots of exploration," Tribbett said.

Both Hammond and EdVenture camps cater to a range of age groups, starting at the pre-K level. Hammond camps run up to high school, and EdVenture camps serve children up to 10 years old.

And according to both camp spokespersons, they seem to get something out of it, too.

"I've never seen more authentic learning than here at EdVenture," said Tribbett.

"I get to be around them a lot during the summer and interact with them. And I really like to see when they come to Hammond because they had a really good experience in camp," concluded White.

Both camps are still open to registration, with the final registration time being the week before the camp starts.
