Students are raising money for a liver transplant for Aiyana Colbert.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Just four months after the loss of Amya Carr, a member of South Carolina State's Champagne Dance Team, the squad is going through another trying time.

Aiyana Colbert is currently at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in waiting.

"She needs a new liver and it will have to happen by the end of this year," her mom, Sherita Colbert, said.

Nineteen-year-old Aiyana was diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis in 2016, and her health has worsened over time. She is now on bed rest until she can get a new liver.

"I definitely don't see this as anything sad, or bad, I really think of it like as a second chance to come back and come back even better than before," Aiyana said.

Her boyfriend, Theo Reed, said he and other students in the S.C. State band think the world of her and want to do everything they can to make sure she gets better.

"We are doing a carwash fundraiser to make sure she can get her surgery and make sure she can recover," Reed explained.

According to Reed, the students are hosting the carwash Saturday, Aug. 3 to raise the cost of Aiyana's new beginning.

"We are trying to raise $12,000 at least, but if we can raise more, that would be great," Reed said.

The car wash will be at Advanced Auto Parts at 2068 Columbia Road in Orangeburg from noon until 4 p.m. tomorrow.
