COLUMBIA, S.C. — March 9, 2021 is National Meatball Day in the United States. To commemorate the day, News19 reached out to a local chef who shares with you, his recipe for meatballs.
News19's Andrea Mock spoke with Mike Davis, award-winning chef at Terra in West Columbia, who demonstrated how he makes meatballs at the restaurant.
If you want to try Chef Mike's recipe, here's how.
What you will need:
- 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
- 1/2 pound of ground pork
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of bread crumbs
- 2 cloves of garlic
- salt
- pepper
- sugar
- crushed red pepper
- coriander
- toasted fennel seed
- dry milk powder
Directions:
- Put meat into a bowl. Combine spices and add half into the meat mixture. Add one beaten egg. Mix together and then add the rest of the spices.
- Once it is mixed, form into a round meatball. Try to have them each about the same size.
- Add canola oil to a pan. Once the oil and pan is hot, add meatballs into the pan. Try not to overcrowd the pan, and work in batches if needed. Lower the stove's heat to medium. Turn the meatball 3 times to get marks on them. They will still be rare.
- Add to the sauce. They will continue to cook in the sauce. Once you add the last batch in the sauce, let poach for an additional 5 to 8 minutes.
Enjoy!
