Humpback whale skull washes up on North Carolina beach

Authorities said the skull was discovered on the beaches of Cape Hatteras.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — A Humpback whale skull washed to shore on the Outer Banks.

Officials said the skull was discovered on the beaches of Cape Hatteras.

Humpback whales have unique skull structures to support their feeding habits.

Their skulls are relatively flexible, especially around the jaw joints, which allows them to open their mouths wide to take in large amounts of water and prey. 

The Humpback whale is not the only marine mammal you may see on the Outer Banks, you could also see various marine mammal activity.

Is the whale skull still on the beach?

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore said the skull is currently in their possession to be used for educational purposes.
