COLUMBIA, S.C. — A beloved lion at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden has passed away, according to zoo officials.
"We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our beloved male lion, Zuri, a cherished member of the Riverbanks family for nearly two decades," zoo officials wrote on Facebook.
Born at Sedwick County Zoo, Zuri arrived at Riverbanks in 2005. Zoo officials say Zuri had recently celebrated his 20th birthday, which "stands as a testament to the exceptional care he received from Riverbanks staff over the years."
During his time at Riverbanks, officials said Zuri played a critical role by fathering 13 cubs and contributing significantly to the population of African lions.
"His morning roars were a comforting sound for many, marking the start of each day," officials said. "Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy and memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts."
According to officials, Lionesses Thabisa and Lindelani will soon be back on habitat for guests to visit.
"They have recently been cared for behind the scenes by Zuri’s side, and their return will help to maintain the natural social dynamics of the pride," they added.
