Columbia, SC (WLTX) - You'll soon have a chance to help struggling families in our community find the food they need.
The seventh annual Food from the Heart drive will take place this Saturday, March 21st, at participating grocery stores in Richland and Lexington Counties. The event supports Harvest Hope Food Bank.
The Food Research and Action Center says South Carolina ranks 14th in the nation for families suffering food hardship, with 14 percent of our state uncertain if they will have enough to eat from day to day.
The mission drive is organized by church volunteers, who stand outside grocery stores to give shoppers the opportunity to purchase products off a list of suggested items. The items are then placed in a "Food from the Heart" grocery bag, which are collected and taken over to Harvest Hope.
Last year, volunteers from Shandon Baptist and Northside Baptist Churches collected 110,177 pound of food.
