BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. — Do you know a senior citizen who could benefit from receiving fresh produce? On Monday, Aug. 19, the South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) will hold a special senior produce voucher distribution event for the 2024 Senior Farmers' Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP).
Eligible seniors will be given $50 (five $10 checks) for fresh fruits and vegetables during the 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. event at Killian Park Gym, 1424 Marthan Rd., in Blythewood.
Folks are encouraged to come out and fill out an application on-site (don't forget to bring your identification card). Produce vouchers will be given instantly with an approved application.
To be considered for eligibility, participants must:
- be age 60 or older
- have a yearly income of $26,973 or less ($36,482 for two people)
- report their household size (jointly or separately)
- have a valid, legal form of identification
SFMNP is funded by USDA grants and allows participants to purchase unprocessed fruits and vegetables from authorized farmers’ markets, roadside stands, and community-supported agriculture programs. The deadline to redeem the vouchers for the 2024 season is October 15th, as they do not carry over from year to year.
