Mecklenburg County approves $1.5 million to address north Charlotte food desert

The addition comes after Mecklenburg County leaders approved $1.5 million to add a West Coast Spangler's Market.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Board of Mecklenburg County Commissioners is focused on tackling a food desert in north Charlotte.

In May, county commissioners approved $1.5 million for West Coast Spanglers Market to help build a grocery store in north Charlotte.

The addition would bridge a gap in the area's access to grocery stores and healthy food options.

Loraine Moore, a north Charlotte resident, told WCNC Charlotte's Myles Harris it takes her 30 minutes to get to the closest grocery store in the area.

Mark Jerrell, a Mecklenburg County Commissioner, said it's a mission to change that.

“Let's dispense with these food deserts in areas of food insecurity," Jerrell said about the money to add a Spangler's Market to the area. “Everyone should have access to healthy food and nutrition options, without question."

Accessibility is something Moore welcomes into her neighborhood.

“It will be a pleasure to see this grocery store come here because everybody can be proud of it," Moore said.

The market will be on the corner of Kohler Avenue and Statesville Avenue.

County commissioners hope the grocery store will be open for business by the end of 2025.
