GREENSBORO, N.C. — The outpouring of love and support for the Nix family has been overwhelming since Sergeant Philip Dale Nix's passing.
Sgt. Nix was off-duty when he was shot and killed in December at the Sheetz in Colfax.
People who knew him, have been creating memorials. Those who didn't know him have been donating to fundraisers to honor the fallen officer.
One man, in particular, gave everything he had to help Sgt. Nix's family.
At the corner of Muirs Chapel and West Market Street, you'll find Steven Womack. He lives in Greensboro.
He said he lives on a fixed income and stands on the side of the road in hopes of making a little extra cash as well as spreading joy.
You can imagine how many friends he's made doing this.
One friend in particular was Sgt. Philip Dale Nix.
Womack explained, "He was a nice guy. I met him. He would come up here and we would sit right here and we laughed and talked. He wasn't a bad guy."
Womack said he was speechless when he learned of Sgt. Nix's death.
"It brings a hurting, especially on the family, the wife and the kids, and then it puts a hurting on the people that knew him that cared a lot about him. It put a hurting on them," Womack said.
With not much to his name, Womack went straight to the bank to take out everything he had.
With $200 in his hand, he went to the Greensboro Police Department and donated the money to the Nix family.
"I feel like God put in my heart to do that," Womack explained.
A picture was taken of Womack and posted to Facebook, shared by the Greensboro Police Department.
The post reads:
Thought this would be worth sharing, this man came into the police lobby very emotional with tears in his eyes telling me he’s a panhandler and how much Sgt. Nix meant to him and how he made a positive impact on him. This man right here pulled out a considerable amount of money and insisted on donating it to Sgt. Nix’s wife and son. This speaks volumes of not only what kind of person Sgt. Nix was, but what kind of person this giving man is. A humbling moment to say the least.
Sgt. Dale Nix's funeral arrangements are set for Thursday, Jan. 11, at 2 p.m. at Westover Church on Muirs Chapel Road in Greensboro, according to the official obituary website.
