Historic Claussen's in Five Points reopens as apartments

It was once a bakery, then a hotel and now apartments

A historic building in Columbia has reopened its doors to the public.

Claussen's, located on Gervais Street in Five Points has called Five Points home for almost 100 years.

Originally opened as a commercial bakery in 1928 and stopped operating in 1963,  It then began life as a hotel-Claussen's Inn in 1986  and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, and stayed open until 2015.

Now after months of renovations, Claussen's is open again, this time as an apartment complex.

"This is going to be an exciting opportunity to attract talented people here to Five Points," Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin said during a ribbon cutting Tuesday, "This village is a very special place and has meant so much to Columbia for several hundred years."

The complex has been renovated and now has 29 units, each consisting of vintage elements that replicate the old Claussen's Bakery design.

Julie Tuttle, who served as the lead designer for the apartments, says she is happy to bring the Claussen's back to Five Points.

"It's a very important building in Columbia's history, its important to the future of Five Points in Columbia, and we wanted to blend that in with the design." Tuttle said.
