COLUMBIA, S.C. — Things are tight all over this holiday season. While some of us will be warm at home exchanging gifts and gathering around the table for a family meal, remember there will be those who may be doing without or doing with less.
To help, the City of Columbia is launching two annual holiday initiatives on Monday, November 11, both aimed at making the holidays a little more filling and a little warmer this year.
Martin Luther King Jr. Honor the Dream Food Drive benefitting Harvest Hope Food Bank. This annual food drive honors Dr. King's legacy of community service.
Items requested include:
- canned fruit and vegetables, pull top/pop-top cans preferred
- canned or pouches of meats, (if canned, pull top/pop-top cans preferred)
- peanut butter
- cereal
- ramen noodle packs
- boxes of single-serve breakfast items (oatmeal, grits, granola bars)
- single-serve pop-top canned meals
- shelf-stable milk
Food donations will be accepted through November 22 at the following locations:

The C.H.U.G.S. Winter Donation Drive wants to help keep those in need warmer this winter with donations of Coats, Hats, Underwear, Gloves and Socks. The City's Homeless Services and Office of Violent Crime Prevention partner to collect new and gently used (in good condition) items in all sizes for men and women, through December 31.
