34 years of Thanksgiving giving: St. Peter’s Church serves meals and community

St. Peter’s Church continues a 34-year Thanksgiving tradition, offering meals and fellowship to hundreds, embodying the holiday spirit of sharing and care.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — While many spent Thanksgiving with family and friends, an annual event in downtown Columbia served as a reminder that the holiday season is about more than one day—it's a time for giving and sharing.

For the 34th year, St. Peter's Catholic Church opened its doors to offer a warm meal and a sense of community to those who might otherwise have been alone.

The church's interfaith Thanksgiving dinner has become a tradition, offering food and the spirit of gratitude and togetherness.

Hal Lominick, the event coordinator, says keeping the holiday spirit alive for all is a priority.

"It's a great feeling its somewhere for them to go when they might be by themselves," said Lominick. "And we welcome them here into the church just to be around a community with people in need."

Attendees like Lilly Brown expressed deep appreciation for the event. "I would have been hungry," she said, underscoring the importance of having access to a meal during the holiday season.

Volunteer Desharah Israel, who has helped at the event for several years, emphasized the significance of giving back.

"Its very important to come and help out if you're ever just not doing anything on a fourth Saturday or for thanksgiving or Christmas, easter, the big holidays just come here and help put a smile on somebody's face," said Israel.

For many, including attendee Joe Cox, the gathering is about more than just the food.

"You can come here and feel relaxed and have a good meal with the Catholics, as well as the Baptists , pastor Sylvia helps us too from down the road, they all come together to try give us a holiday meal."

The interfaith dinner brought people together over a shared meal and reflected the enduring community spirit that extends beyond the Thanksgiving holiday.

St. Peter’s Catholic Church will continue this tradition next month with a free Christmas dinner, furthering its mission to provide nourishment and a sense of belonging during the holiday season.
