COLUMBIA, S.C. — They shade you in the summer and dazzle with their changing colors in the fall. They can be majestic and have great sentimental value.

They are our trees.

The City of Columbia Public Works Department, Forestry & Beautification Division, and Midlands Area Treasured Tree Program is seeking to document and preserve trees that have significant value to the community. Nominations are being accepted through Wednesday, Nov. 22, for trees that meet the following criteria:

  • aesthetic or sentimental value
  • superior size or scarcity of species
  • association with historical events
  • environmental benefits and value
  • being a great tree from which to swing or climb

Trees can be on public or private property in the Greater Columbia Metropolitan area.

Nominations will be accepted via email (to Forestry@columbiasc.net) or delivered by hand/mail to Columbia Forestry & Beautification Division Treasured Trees at 2910 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC, 29203. Write a brief description of the tree and what makes it special, its location, and a photograph of the tree, along with your name and contact information for your nomination.
