COLUMBIA, S.C. — While dogs and cats have traditionally been popular choices, there's a growing trend towards alternative pets, such as birds.
Angela Koon, co-owner of Pets with Attitude in Lexington and a lifelong bird owner, emphasized the special bond birds can create within a household. Koon stated, “It's a bond like no other. I mean, we often refer to them like our children. They love you. You’re their flock.”
Birds' compact size and minimal space requirements make them suitable for apartments or smaller homes. Additionally, they generally require less grooming than many other pets.
However, like with any pet, there are a few factors to keep in mind, such as mess and noisiness. Reggie Koon, the other co-owner of Pets with Attitude and also lifelong bird owner, stressed the importance of thorough research before bringing a bird home.
Koon advised, “The biggest thing with these is people doing the research. Go online and research the animal to see what's going on to suit them.”
If you are considering adding a feathered friend to your household, a trip to the bird store might just be the first step.
