Is pet clothing really necessary?

As the temperatures drop and the leaves turn, some pet owners are looking to outfit their pets in cozy and stylish attire.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — From tiny sweaters to plaid jackets, pet fashion can be more than just photo-worthy. It can be functional. Pets can feel the chill, and not all of them have thick fur to keep them warm.

Make sure your furry friend's clothes are comfortable and safe if you plan to buy them.

Libba Ulery works in the adoptions and communications department at Pawmetto Lifeline. She says it's important to consider the needs of different pets.

“If you’ve got something going on, say poison oak or poison ivy, can you imagine putting a sweater on top of that? A dog's skin reacts the same," says Ulery.

As we head further into autumn and winter, there's concern about pets getting cold outside.

“Luckily, we don’t have extreme temperatures here. Maybe just one or two days a week. That’s when you go into the heavy-duty stuff,” Ulery said.

While pet clothing can be cute and functional, it's essential to ensure that it's safe and comfortable for your pet, too.

“They will not move. They will stand there, stiff-legged, looking around like, 'I’m not walking anywhere.' They’ll be afraid to walk in it,” Ulery said.

If you’re looking for a companion to dress up this fall, many available animals are waiting for their forever homes at Pawmetto Lifeline.
