COLUMBIA, S.C. — As worries rise about unknown ingredients in commercial pet food, many dog owners are turning to alternatives.
Woof Gang Bakery and Grooming is a privately owned dog bakery in the Midlands. Kaitlyn, a sales representative for the bakery, discussed the benefits of their treats.
“As far as our other treats go, we have a lot of, like, single ingredient treats, and even up to, like, three ingredients,” she said.
At this bakery, treats are not made by them, but instead by a partner who shares their commitment to quality and transparency.
Natural ingredients are used in homemade treats instead of artificial additives, preservatives, and fillers.
Kaitlyn highlighted concerns regarding mass-produced treats.
"Some of the big brands, there's a lot of recalls and things like that. You don't necessarily always know what's going to be in the treats, especially when they're being produced at some of these bigger places.”
The FDA “requires that all animal foods, like human foods, be safe to eat, produced under sanitary conditions, contain no harmful substances, and be truthfully labeled.” Still, every year, thousands of complaints of pet illnesses can be reported to the FDA.
With homemade options, pet owners can be certain what they're feeding their pets.
