GOLDEN, Colo. — Heavy snow didn’t stop hundreds of golden retrievers from filling downtown Golden Saturday, for "Goldens in Golden."
The annual celebration draws people and pups from all over the country, but this is the first time they’ve dealt with heavy snow during it.
“It just shows how much people love this event if they’re willing to brave the weather and come see us,” said Megan Pinson with Visit Golden.
Katie Ford brought her 6-year-old golden retriever, Rilo, from Iowa.
“It’s the best day, and I don’t even are about the weather, it’s so great,” she said. “I feel my heart exploding. They’re so cute, every one of them is so cute.”
By noon, the smell of wet dog filled Washington Avenue as hundreds of dogs lined up for the annual photo.
“It’s crazy, but we’re having a great time,” said Charlie Alfrey. “It’s absolutely worth it.”
By the time the event ended at 1 p.m., heavy snow was pounding Jefferson County, leaving the roads a slick mess.
“Golden retrievers are a hardy breed, and Coloradans are, too,” said Pinson. “I think they’re all embracing it.”
Goldens in Golden is held on the Saturday closest to National Golden Retriever Day, Feb. 3, which this year fell on Saturday.
According to U.S. News & World Report, the golden retriever is the most popular dog breed in Colorado. The golden retriever was followed in the hearts of Coloradans by the Chihuahua, Goldendoodle, German Shepard, and French Bulldog.
