COLUMBIA, S.C. — Animal abuse is a serious problem that countless animals face every single day. Recognizing the signs of abuse and neglect is crucial in protecting our furry friends.
Dawn Wilkinson is the Executive Director of the Humane Society of South Carolina. Dawn explains, “Unintentional neglect due to maybe lack of education and a lack of resources. And then also there is intentional neglect where someone is not providing an animal food and water shelter purposefully.”
She also encourages those who see or suspect abuse to report it. Dawn reminds that, “If you don't say something, the animal is not going to say something. They don't have a voice, we are their voice."
The National Humane Society suggests looking for signs such as unexplained injuries, malnutrition, poor living conditions, and behavioral changes. If an animal is constantly tied up, kept in a small, confined space, or left without sufficient food, water, or shelter, this is a red flag.
Dawn mentions a recent case,: “They put it in a cage on the front porch. A neighbor saw this dog outside with no food, water and not an appropriate shelter. The owner did not want to come into compliance because it ended up the family didn't really want the dog to begin with. The animal ended up being surrendered to us. The dog came back here and received medical care and I can say that it is a totally different dog.”
By recognizing the signs and knowing how to report them, we can help protect the animals in our community.
If you know of an animal suffering from abuse or neglect, the humane society urges you to reach out to them. Their contact information is info@humanesc.org or 803.783.1267.
