Paid or public dog park?

Thanks to more options than ever before, dog owners now have a choice to make: private or public dog parks? News19’s Erin Walker explores some of your options.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — As the weather warms up, many dog owners are looking for the perfect spot to let their furry friends run free and socialize. But when it comes to private versus public dog parks, which one reigns supreme?

Dog parks offer a space for our beloved pets to enjoy the outdoors. However, there are some differences between public and private dog parks. With restricted entry, private dog parks offer a controlled, predictable environment with fewer unknowns.

Eugenia Leonard-Davis is the coordinator for NoMa Bark Park in Columbia. She says security is their biggest advantage.

"When you are a member of our dog park, you've paid a fee to know that your dog and every dog that's in there has had all their shots, is registered and spayed or neutered. When you go to a public park, it's a mixed bag," she said.

NoMa Bark Park, a non-profit, membership-based facility, levies a $40 annual fee, a factor contributing to its quality, notes Justin Weinberg, a board member.

"I think most of the members realize that because we have the rules and, we have a group of members who are dedicated to making sure that they're enforced," Weinberg states.

Fees for parks can range from $20 to $40, depending on the park.

On the other hand, public dog parks in the Midlands are accessible to all. Any dog owner can enjoy socialization and exercise with their pet for free. These parks often attract a variety of dogs and owners, creating a sense of community.

Ultimately, the choice between private and public parks hinges on individual preferences and needs.
