Here's what you should do if you lose your pet

One of pet owners' biggest nightmares is losing their fur baby.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Victoria Riles, superintendent at City of Columbia Animal Services, says, "Statistically pets are usually within a two-mile radius if they go missing.”

“Microchipping is usually the tool in those cases," says Riles. "We've had people from out of state who have been missing their pet for sometimes years, and when they get that phone call that their pet is here. Those are just the most heartwarming stories.”

Be sure your contact information is up to date with the microchip company. You can also take other steps, like posting about your lost pet on social media.

“Nextdoor is a neighborhood app. There's a lot of information shared on Nextdoor. Facebook has some really resourceful lost and found platforms,” Riles says.

Hanging lost pet flyers can also yield results.

"At least two photos [of your pet], one of the front and one of the side," Riles said. "Include the date that your pet has gone missing and what your pet's name is. It's really good to know the name because if you are a citizen who thinks you see the pet, sometimes calling them by name can get their attention and get them to come to you.”

Lastly, Riles encourages all pet owners to make sure their pets are always wearing a collar with an ID tag. Ensure your yard is secure, and when outside, keep your pet on a leash.

If you haven’t gotten your pet microchipped yet, you are in luck! Columbia Animal Services is offering free microchipping this month.
