SUMTER, S.C. — Residents of Sumter County will have the opportunity to weigh in on a proposed utility-scale solar farm during a public hearing scheduled for Jan. 10.

The Sumter County Zoning Board of Appeals will take up the proposed BOA-23-30, a request for a special exemption to assemble a 74.99 MWac photovoltaic solar energy system over a total area measuring approximately 1,254 acres -- 650 acres of solar arrays, plus support facilities. The proposed location is along Pinewood Road, Starks Ferry Road, S. St. Paul's Church Road and Gwyndale Road, and is currently zoned Agricultural Conservation (AC).

According to Sumter County GIS, Harvin Family Limited Partners owns the land.

During the Dec. 13, 2023, Board of Zoning Appeals meeting, the council was asked to consider a request for a special exemption for a proposed solar farm along the Florence Highway and Bell, Stackhouse, and Goza roads. That proposed array would be approximately 1,922 acres over multiple tax parcels.
