House, property where Murdaugh family killings took place is up for sale

The house and surrounding acreage is up for bid; possibility of third new owner in as many years

COLLETON COUNTY, S.C. — For the second time in a year, Moselle, the former estate of convicted murderer Alex Murdaugh, is up for sale.

Crosby Land Company and J.P. King are handling the online auction of the Moselle Estate House and surrounding 21.25 acres of land in Colleton County. The minimum bid is $1.1 million, with bids accepted through 2 p.m. on February 15, 2024.

Moselle was the home of Alex and Maggie Murdaugh and their sons Buster and Paul. In March of this year, Alex was convicted of the June 2021 murders of his wife, Maggie, and youngest son, Paul. Alex was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders and faces more time in prison for financial crimes he committed against his former law firm and its clients.

The estate came up for sale for the first time in March 2023. At that time, court records showed that James Ayer and Jeffrey Godley purchased portions of the then-1,700-acre property that Maggie Murdaugh had owned.

In October, Moselle was back on the market with the house and 21 acres of land listed for $1.95 million. It is this carve-out of the original estate that is being auctioned now. The 5,275-square-foot home has four bedrooms, 4.5 baths, front and back porches, and is described as having heart pine floors, a chef's kitchen, a "sizable" rec room, and a primary bedroom on the first floor.

Located in Colleton County, the property is about 45 miles from Beaufort, 70 miles from Charleston, and 75 miles from Savannah. Showings of the property require pre-approval for purchase before setting an appointment.

The Alex Murdaugh murder trial has not quite finished. A hearing has been scheduled for January 29 to hear arguments asking for a new trial based on the defense team's claim of jury tampering by the Colleton County Clerk of Court during the initial trial.
