COLUMBIA, S.C. — Boeing announced it will be investing $1 billion to upgrade infrastructure at its North Charleston facility to increase operations and create 500 new jobs over the next five years.
The airline manufacturer established operations in South Carolina in 2009, and for the past decade has been the production home of the 787 Dreamliner and fabricates, assembles and delivers 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10 models to customers globally.
Currently, according to Boeing, the company employs 7,800 people total at the two locations in North Charleston and its West Campus in Orangeburg. The expansion is planned for the North Charleston campuses at 5400 International Blvd. and 9775 Patriot Blvd. (Airport and North campuses), and would not include the Orangeburg site.
The expansion would support increased 787 Dreamliner production to a rate of 10 airplanes per month by 2026.
On November 15, Boeing announced it would be laying off 220 permanent positions, taking affect January 2025, and an additional layoff of 67 permanent positions were announced on December 6.
