Columbia Planning Commission to vote on proposed 7-story hotel in the Vista Thursday

Girl Scouts in the Midlands are opposing a hotel across the street from their building. Neighboring businesses believe a hotel would give them a boost.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A hotel and parking garage could be coming to Columbia's Vista, but not without mixed emotions from surrounding property owners.

Developers from Naman Hotels and Homewood Suites hope to create a 7-story hotel with 249 rooms, and a four-level parking deck.

The proposed project is right across the street from the Girl Scouts Mountains to Midlands center and their CEO, Lora Tucker, has several concerns.

"Our first concern is the traffic, we walk with the girls to go to the State Museum or EdVenture, and the parking situation could put people right at our front door," Tucker explained.

However, not all of the hotel neighbors feel the same way. Down the street from the proposed development, Senate's End Wedding Venue and Dupre Catering are looking forward to the extra business it could bring.

Dupre Percival, the owner of Dupre Catering says he has known that a large development would be coming to the street for years and looks forward to having more hospitality businesses nearby.

"They are really moving along on this and I think we could see a building within the next 24 months," Percival said. "People can host their wedding right here and then go stay right across the street."

The Columbia Planning Commission is set to take another look at the proposal in a meeting on Thursday at 4 p.m. in Columbia City Hall. Whatever the commission decides this request will be passed along to Columbia City Council for a final vote.
