NEWBERRY, S.C. — Clarity has come to the city of Newberry regarding CBD and vape, tobacco and gunsmith businesses.
The city passed an ordinance to place these businesses in what they say are appropriate zoning areas
"We had requests over the last year for locations of CBD and vape stores within city limits," says city of Newberry's director of planning and zoning, Wayne Redfurn.
"We defined those classifications so it wasn't arbitrary it allowed CBD and vape stores within the city limits and in specific general zoning classifications like general commercial and core commercial and those are the only place they will be allowed within city limits," he says.
That means those shops will be allowed in the downtown area, as well as general commercial areas
"Well gunsmiths came up because the classification wasn't specifically listed within our categorical list for zoning those are shown in our commerical area like where Walmart is," Redfern adds, that means they can only be in general commercial areas and not downtown.
The changes are receiving mixed reviews from community members.
"i don't agree with it all, you just cant open up a business anywhere it's got to be in this select location which actually hurts competition," says resident Mark Johnson.
"I'm for the zoning change, think it could bring about the start of some really good change especially in Newberry," says resident Claire Wooten.
The change does not affect any current businesses, as there are none located in their unzoned areas.
Newberry Town council also approved an ordinance that restricts container homes from being placed within city limits.
