ORANGEBURG, S.C. — An Orangeburg manufacturing facility specializing in the production of ibuprofen and other medications will begin to wrap up production of that drug, leading to the permanent layoff of 74 employees.

SI Group, on Cannon Bridge Road, has filed documents with South Carolina Department of Employment and Workforce (SCDEW) WARN Report, stating it will begin shutting down the production of ibuprofen and laying off employees beginning September 1, 2024, through March 1, 2025.

In a statement to News19, an SI Group representative said, "We continuously evaluate our manufacturing footprint and will entertain all opportunities which provide the best possible long-term strategic options for our business. We must respond to the changing market dynamics and alter our global footprint as needed to ensure the sustainability of our business. In this case, SI Group is not able to competitively supply Ibuprofen to the global market due to our older, more expensive technology. As a result, SI Group will be shutting down its Ibuprofen production line at Orangeburg. However, SI Group will continue manufacturing Propofol, antioxidants, and other products at the site.

SI Group is working closely with the local Labor union to provide support to employees who will be affected by this change. Additionally, local HR and leadership teams are providing support to impacted individuals through job placement services, statutory pay & benefits continuance, and additional company severance programs."

After SI Group ceases production of ibuprofen, approximately 110 jobs will remain at the Orangeburg plant.
