CINCINNATI — South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD) has been awarded $2.4 million by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to fund emergency preparedness within the state as it relates to the DOE and Savannah River Site (SRS).
The funding will help SCEMD support emergency management activities surrounding SRS, including those in Aiken, Allendale, and Barnwell counties. SCEMD's off-site emergency preparedness plans, training, and operations support would provide reasonable assurance of the health and safety of residents living in the area in the event of possible incidents at SRS.
DOE's Office of Environmental Management has remained focused on addressing the environmental legacy of nuclear weapons development and nuclear energy research, which helped end World War II, win the Cold War and position the United States as a leader in clean nuclear energy.
Building 235-F at the SRS, pictured above, was part of the original construction in the early 1950s. According to SRS, Building 235-F is a blast-resistant, windowless, two-story, reinforced concrete structure about 222 feet long, 109 feet wide, and 28 feet high.
