Meta to open new data center in South Carolina

Meta will open a data center in South Carolina by 2027, investing $800 million and creating 100 jobs, focusing on renewable energy.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina will soon be home to a technology giant's new data center, scheduled to become operational in 2027.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp, announced it will establish a data center in the Sage Mill Industrial Park in Aiken County. That location is close to the towns of Vaucluse and Graniteville.

The $800 million investment by the company will support 100 new operational jobs at the 715,000-square-foot data center. The facility will be optimized for Meta’s artificial intelligence (AI) workloads.

Data centers require enormous amounts of electricity for their operations. Meta's electricity use will be matched with 100% renewable energy, and the company will work with local partners to add new renewables to the grid. Once operational, the campus will also achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold certification.

This will be Meta's first data center site in South Carolina, its 22nd in the United States, and its 26th worldwide.

Meta will be working with local businesses to construct, operate, supply and maintain its data centers. Those interested in working for Meta should check out the Meta career page.
