COLUMBIA, S.C. — There could be more living space coming to the Five Points area.

The City of Columbia Planning Commission will review site plans for the development of five new attached townhomes in the 2200 block of Blossom Street near Lowndes Hill Road.

The site is a block away from Harden Street and the Five Points Entertainment District in Columbia.

According to paperwork filed with the planning commission, the idea for new construction was previously approved in 1985, but the build was never carried out. The current plan would feature two off-street parking spaces for each unit and developers would strive to retain existing trees outside of the building's footprint.

City agencies involved in reviewing the plans recommend that the commission approve the development. A formal decision would be made at the planning commission's meeting, scheduled for 5:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, at the Busby Street Community Center at 1735 Busby St., Columbia.

Other items on the Planning Commission's agenda include:

  • annexation of 7800 Garners Ferry Rd. and assignment of general commercial zoning.
  • annexation of 3800 River Dr. and assignment of employment campus zoning
  • site plan review of 294 Harbison Blvd. (Chick-fil-A) construction of a new drive-thru.
  • site plan review for construction of a five-lot single-family residential subdivision (Tee Box Court) in the 100 block of Island View Cir.
  • site plan review of the proposed 250-unit, multifamily mixed-use construction at the former Jim Moore Cadillac site at 2222 Main St.

The public can participate in person (masks and social distancing are required) or virtually on the web at publicinput.com/COCPC-Sept2021.
