LEXINGTON, S.C. — Almost a year after it became a problem, officials with the Town of Lexington have announced it is moving forward in the next phase of a permanent solution to a sewer line failure along the town's East Main Street.
The town has secured the final piece of the puzzle, a final property easement needed to place a new sewer line in the parking lots of several businesses that front East Main Street.
An isolated sewer line failure occurred in March 2023, resulting in the Town placing a utility pump truck along East Main Street in order to maintain normal sewer service for customers. Since the line that failed was laid back in 1925 under a building, it could not be repaired or replaced. Town officials tried a pro-active solution and worked for years to gain an easement from property owners to relocate the line. Those negotiations became stalled until recently.
Now, under an Emergency Ordinance in place by Town Council, the Town of Lexington will acquire a contractor to replace the line. Once the contractor is hired, town officials will meet with the East Main Street businesses and coordinate the work so as to minimize disruption to the businesses, including providing reserved parking on our property as needed.
