COMET to offer 31-day transit passes to low-income Richland County residents

The program is scheduled to continue until June 30, 2022, with all passes being issued directly by COMET.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Columbia's well-known transit service announced a new program on Friday that aims to provide transit options to low-income residents of the area.

Throughout Richland County, the Central Midlands Regional Transit Authority (COMET) is offering 31-day bus passes at no cost to residents who qualify.

The COMET is a part of the community. For those that need transportation but cannot afford it, the ability to get to social services, jobs, schools, and other quality of life destinations can be accessed through The COMET," interim executive director LeRoy DesChamps said in a recent statement.

A limited budget will also be available to non-profit organizations that work with low-income residents after filling out a request-for-donation form.

The funding for the new transportation project comes from the Richland County Community Development Block Grant program. In a media release, COMET described the new transit pass program as similar to one started in Lexington County in 2020 - but also a direct response to a need in Richland County.

"This program was created because we have many requests for free or discounted bus passes for low-income residents who could not afford the regular bus fare," Deschamps said.

The program is scheduled to be in effect until June 30, 2022, with all passes being issued directly by COMET.

Eligibility is based on the federal standard for poverty created by the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

To apply for the Lifeline Program, contact COMET's Mobility Management specialist at 803-834-2382 or email mobility@TheCOMETSC.gov. Those interested can also visit the COMET website to download an application or contact a specialist if assistance is necessary.
