COLUMBIA, S.C. — Spring is in the air and that means a lot of us are starting flower and vegetable gardens in our back yards, patios and balconies. But what if you don’t have time or space for a vegetable garden -- or just don’t have a green thumb but still want to have fresh veggies throughout the summer?
Subscribing to a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program might be the answer for you. CSAs are subscription shares of produce and meats available from single farms and growers or co-ops and come in different sizes (small, medium or large boxes), prices and delivery options to fit your needs. Some CSAs offer delivery to your door, most are pick-up from centralized locations. You often have the option to buy a subscription by the season (spring, summer, fall) or year-round.
CSAs are also a great way to help support your local farmers who, like many others, are struggling to overcome income losses due to the coronavirus pandemic. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture maintains a statewide list of CSAs and you can find others through Local Harvest.
