South Carolina Department of Revenue has tips for filing your taxes

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Monday, January 29, marked the beginning of individual income tax filing season.

While employers have until January 31 to distribute W-2 forms to employees, the South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) have begun accepting Individual Income Tax returns. Processing of the returns will begin on Monday, February 5, SCDOR says.

The agency has some tips and tools for those filing returns:

  • Before you start filling out those tax forms, make sure you have all W-2s, 1099s, and other necessary documents. W-2s are necessary because year-end check stubs may not match what your employer reports to SCDOR. 1099s are reports of income received from a person or entity that is typically not your employer, such as interest earned, or income collected as an independent contractor/self-employed worker or landlord/leaser.
  • If you need copies of your 2021 or 2022 returns, you can access them using MyDORWAY.dor.sc.gov. SCDOR's free online tax portal.
  • Make sure SCDOR and your employer have your current address
  • Choose the online filing method that is best for you. Visit dor.sc.gov/iit-filing to view your filing options. Many South Carolinians are eligible to file online for free.
  • Choose direct deposit for a faster, safer refund option.
  • Make good use of SCDOR's YouTube channel where you will find more tips for 24/7 assistance and check out dor.sc.gov/tax-tips
  • The deadline to file your taxes without an extension is Monday, April 15.

After you've filed, allow time for processing and fraud prevention. This means any tax refund may take up to 8 weeks from the date that you file. Also, direct deposits will be made faster than processing a paper check refund.

If you're getting a refund, you can track refund status using the Where's My Refund tool at dor.sc.gov/refund
