COLUMBIA, S.C. — Macy's department store announced on Tuesday, Jan. 5, that it will begin closing locations throughout the United States as part of the company's strategy announced pre-pandemic 2020. The company plans to close 125 stores by 2023.
WLTX reached out to Macy's spokesperson Jacqueline King who said, "After careful consideration, Macy’s has decided to close our Greenbriar location (near Augusta)."
Macy's Greenbriar had been in business for 55 years. A clearance sale will begin in January and run for approximately 8-12 weeks.
Regular, non-seasonal colleagues who we are unable to place at nearby Macy’s store will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources.
King also said there are no further store impacts beyond this store within Georgia, North Carolina or South Carolina.
Macy's has a store in Columbia -- located at Columbia Place, 7201 Two Notch Rd. -- and at Haywood Mall in Greenville.
A full list of stores scheduled for closure can be found here.
Customers can continue to shop online at macys.com or on the Macy’s app.
