Rural homeowner improvement projects in South Carolina get federal funding from USDA

Qualifying very-low income homeowners may benefit from USDA Rural Development home preservation monies

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Very-low income homeowners in certain counties of South Carolina may now be eligible for federal funding of home improvement and repairs through the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development's Housing Preservation Grant Program.

The USDA is funding more than 200 projects nationwide, four here in South Carolina, as a waRural y to improve infrastructure, housing and economic conditions for underserved rural and Native American communities. Of the $81 million nationwide investment, almost $600,000 will go to South Carolina projects in Allendale, Chesterfield, Clarendon, and Horry counties. The funding will go to owner-occupied homes for a variety of home repairs and improvement projects overseen by the following organizations:

  • Allendale County Alive, $100,000 is expected to benefit 7 to 10 households in Allendale County
  • The Town of Cheraw, $198,817 to benefit between 9 to 12 households located in the town of Cheraw in Chesterfield County
  • Vision by Design, $90,000 to benefit 10 households in Clarendon County
  • Horry County W&S, $198,817 to benefit 20 households in Horry County

The USDA defines very-low income as being below 50% of area median income, low income is defined as 50-80% of area median income. To see if you qualify, contact local organizations or check out USDA's Single Family Homeowner Assistance Fund.
