Richland County discusses proposed $16.5 million factory expansion

The project would bring 100 new jobs to a local gun manufacturer.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — One hundred new jobs could be coming to Richland County with a proposed expansion of a local gun manufacturer.

The county approved the next steps in the process, but some residents are concerned about the possible change.

The investment price for Project Charlie Echo, a proposed manufacturing company expansion, is $16.5 million. According to the Richland County Council agenda, an unspecified local gun factory is looking to expand operations.

“I will say, it’s a long-time manufacturer in northeast Columbia, they’ve done a lot for our military. I think, out of respect for everyone in the services and veterans, I think we need to approve this," Councilman Don Weaver said.

If approved the expansion would result in 100 new full-time jobs, which will boost economic development in the area.

“Well, bringing new jobs is a good thing, I mean, there are people looking for jobs even though the economy is booming with plenty of jobs and people want them,” Isabelle Scruggs, a resident, said.

Residents say it’s a plus for the economy but there are concerns.

“Gun manufacturers, I’m not saying I’m against it but if they’re gonna have it, I’m - if they’re going to be making more guns what are the regulations,” Scruggs said.

Some council members share those concerns.

“Tonight, we celebrated this week - we just celebrated - a manufacturer that is going to be bringing in a lot of positivity to Richland County and that there is plenty of money in this other industry and they don’t need our extra dollars," Councilwoman Allison Terracio said.

The council approved the first reading of the proposal. Now, it moves forward for more discussion.
